Natasha Viljoen

You attended Oakfields College and did a full time course with us.  What course did you study and what was your favourite subject in that course?

I studied photography full-time at Oakfields College. My favourite subject was our practical classes in photography, but I also enjoyed my business subjects.

Tell us a little about what you have been doing in the photography industry.

I started this year working at a photography company in Hatfield called Gordon Harris Photographic, where I photographed a lot of graduations. Myself and a past Oakfields College student, Annemi, were both promoted within the first two months of working there and were put in charge of the studio at Gordon Harris.

For five months we photographed everything one can think of including family photo shoots to photographing handmade carpets for a catalogue. During this process I gained so much experience and learnt that photography is most definitely what I want to do for the rest of my life. I also realised that I enjoy natural lighting and that it was time for my next challenge.

I then resigned from Gordon Harris Photographic and started my own lifestyle photography business called. I mainly focus on people photography, such as weddings, family, children and couple shoots, as well as photography at various events.

What do you enjoy most about your current job?

I mainly enjoy the fact that I can live my passion daily through my work and not many people can say that. I have my own hours and I say what goes and what does not. I get out exactly the amount of effort I put in.

What advice would you give students studying the same course that you did?

I would advise them not to take any practical exam and/or assignment lightly as that is where you gain most of your knowledge. Get as much experience as possible! No one can ever take that away from you.

What is your definition of “happiness”?

I know with my whole heart and soul that the Lord’s way is the only way for us to experience enduring happiness! Happiness does not depend on what happens outside of you but on what happens inside of you; it is measured by my own God whom meets the problems of my life.

What are the main lessons you have learnt since you have started working?

I’ve learnt that not everybody’s going to agree with you and that everybody’s opinion will always differ. Nevertheless, don't let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big!

If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why?

Most definitely Taylor Swift because she inspires, dreams and achieves!!
