DO YOU OFFER PART-TIME MUSICAL THEATRE AND DANCE?
The Oakfields College Faculty of Musical Theatre and Dance Diploma is a three year, full-time course with occasional rehearsals, workshops and work integrated learning opportunities occurring outside of regular class hours in the evenings, weekends and/or some holiday periods. Our training is industry-based with the emphasis being on assisting young performers with the launching of their professional careers in the entertainment industry and preparing them for the demands thereof. For this reason, we unfortunately do not offer any part-time courses in musical theatre as the training is intensive and requires a full three-year commitment.
WHAT INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNTUITES WILL I HAVE ONCE I GRADUATE?
A number of our graduates have enjoyed international travel while performing on stages across the world - having travelled to over 80 different cities while on professional contracts (including Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Turkey, Portugal and Norway – to name but a few.) Musical theatre graduate Tyla Nurden is part of the cast for the Rocky Horror Show’s UK and international tour, while four other graduates are currently performing in the We Will Rock You world tour.
I WANT TO PERFORM AND TEACH. DO YOU OFFER TEACHER’S TRAINING IN DANCE?
At the end of the course, students will receive a Diploma in Performing Arts (NQF Level 6). While the emphasis is on performance-based training, we can also support and facilitate additional, external qualifications through organisations such as the TRINITY COLLEGE, the CECCHETTI SOCIETY, DASA or the ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE for students who wish to take on teacher’s courses in their individual capacity.
CAN I AUDITION ONLINE?
Yes! We understand that extenuating circumstances may prevent you from getting to us and so we do accept online auditions for those who want to submit their applications electronically. You are welcome to email us for the information and instructions.
DO YOU OFFER BURSARIES?
Yes. The Oakfields College/Anthony Farmer Trust is a bursary trust established to assist deserving/needy performing arts students with financial assistance to cover their tuition fees. In order to assist as many students as possible only partial bursaries are awarded and these amounts vary depending on the individual student’s need and number of bursary applications each year.
I WANT TO AUDITION BUT I DON’T HAVE ANY SINGING EXPERIENCE.
Participants will be assessed on their acting, singing and dancing abilities and should demonstrate exceptional talent in at least ONE of the disciplines. Previous training/experience is not a pre-requisite as the panel will be looking for raw potential, a true passion for performance, a strong work ethic and a resilient personality.
IS YOUR MUSICAL THEATRE AND DANCE COURSE INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED?
Oakfields College is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, under the Higher Education act, 1997. Upon completing their training, students will receive a fully accredited Diploma in Performing Arts (NQF Level 6).The phrase ‘internationally recognised’ should be used with extreme care as it implies that there is one, universal qualification that is accepted by all institutions world-wide. This is misleading and you should beware of institutions that claim to offer ‘internationally recognised’ qualifications and exploit this term for marketing purposes. The truth is, that although one MIGHT receive subject credits for the various NQF levels at different institutions, each institution has its own unique set of criteria and syllabi and may base their acceptance of a student or grant Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) based ONLY on their specific criteria - despite the previous NQF level. It is entirely possible to receive credits for recognised qualifications but this is NEVER a given, so always be cautious of such claims.
HOW WILL OAKFIELDS COLLEGE HELP ME LAUNCH MY MUSICAL THEATRE AND DANCE CAREER?
In order to assist our students with launching their careers, our annual Third Year Showcase serves as a platform for our seniors to showcase their talents to a variety of VIP agents, producers, directors and key industry role players. This final college production is the culmination of their student training with more than 80% of third years signing with South Africa’s top agents. We also include valuable subjects such as Business Management, Industry Prep and Arts Administration into the curriculum to ensure our students are fully trained in all aspects of show BUSINESS.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO COMPLETE THE COURSE?
3 years.
