If you love creating new looks, commenting on people’s clothes or poring over fashion magazines, the glamorous world of fashion design could be for you!

How do I know if it’s the right career for me?

You’ll need to be creative, with a good sense of colour and style, an eye for detail and a flair for knowing what works. If you have these innate abilities, a fashion design course can teach you the rest.

During the Oakfields College two-year, full-time fashion design course, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the industry, along with the practicalities of putting together garments, from designing and pattern making through to sewing. Attending SA Fashion Week will expose you to the latest upcoming designers as well as established names in the business. You’ll also be encouraged to come up with innovative designs of your own, then make them yourself to display at our annual fashion show.

What can I do with a fashion design qualification?

A fashion design course prepares you for a wide variety of roles in the industry, from the more general to specialist areas such as accessories or wedding outfits. You will be equipped to become a fashion designer yourself or to work in a manufacturing business. You could also become a stylist, fashion buyer or retail manager for a boutique or chain store.

Once I complete my studies, then what?

The fashion industry is highly competitive so your first priority needs to be to gain some good experience and build your portfolio. Start by applying for internships in your area of interest and work on building as many connections as you can. With talent and determination, it’s even possible that one day you may become a household name like Errol Arendz or Marianne Fassler!
