What does it take to create an award-winning production? Grit. Talent. Vision. A whole lot of heart.
And last year, that’s exactly what came together in our production of Godspell - a show that not only tested our students artistically and emotionally, but has now gone on to win the Naledi Award for Best Student Theatre Production.
We are incredibly proud of this win - and of the young performers and creatives who made it happen.
Performed at The Lesedi Theatre at Joburg Theatre in August 2024, Godspell was more than just our annual production. It was an opportunity to connect our students to a vital piece of South African theatre history.
Originally banned in apartheid South Africa for featuring a multiracial cast, Godspell became a symbol of artistic resistance when Des and Dawn Lindberg took on the Supreme Court and won. Our version honoured that legacy, while offering something entirely fresh - a spirited, contemporary interpretation helmed by director Tracey Human, musical director Dale Ray, and choreographer Timothy Le Roux.

Featuring a cast of first to third year musical theatre and dance students, with guest performances by Grant Towers and Raymond Skinner in the roles of Judas and Jesus, the production blended joy, vulnerability, discipline, and soul. The result? A performance that resonated deeply with audiences (and judges) alike.
And while we are thrilled about the accolade, the award is ultimately a reflection of something bigger - what we aim to do every single day at Oakfields College.
We don’t just teach performance.
We build careers.
We nurture the kind of professionalism, creativity, and resilience that students need to thrive in a tough but rewarding industry.
This award is a powerful milestone for our programme, but it’s also a celebration of the journey: from that first nerve-wracking audition, to the long rehearsals, to opening night - and now, to national recognition.
We are grateful to the Naledi Theatre Awards Board for acknowledging the importance of student theatre. And to our team of lecturers, creatives, choreographers, and mentors - your guidance is the bedrock of everything we do.
To our students: you did this. And this is only the beginning.
If you’re dreaming of a future in the performing arts, maybe your journey starts here.
Auditions for our 2026 intake are open. And who knows? You might just be part of the next award-winning production.
